Yujie Sui

Bio

Yujie Sui is an associate professor at the Department of Social Work and Social Policy, Renmin University of China. She received her PhD from The University of Hong Kong. Her research mainly focuses on social support for older adults, coping with death, and social work professionalization in China.

Dr. Sui served as principal investigator and team leader on a wide range of research projects funded by the China National Social Science Foundation, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China, and Asian Development Bank. She is one of the pioneers in promoting the establishment of a professional workforce in gerontological social work in China. In recent years, she has been focusing her research on mutual support among older adult self-help groups and the roles and functions of social workers in health care services for older people.

Dr. Sui has worked in the field of social work education for more than 30 years. Her textbook Social Case Work was named the National Textbook of the Year by the Ministry of Education of China in 2008. As a member of the Chinese Social Work Education Association, she participated in establishing the teaching standards for social work education in China. She also contributed to developing professional guidelines in Gerontological Social Work by serving in the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. In addition, she serves as a board member and supervisor for various NGOs in China to promote evidence-based practice in social work with the older population.

Dr. Sui will be conducting a research project entitled “Coping with Loss: Effectiveness of Social Service Programs for Parents Who Lost a Child” during her visit at Columbia.
