China Center 2021-2022 Lecture Series on COVID-19 Impacts and Responses in China and Beyond

The Columbia China Center for Social Policy will hold its 2021-2022 Lecture Series on the theme of “COVID-19 Impacts and Responses in China and Beyond.” This series covers a wide range of topics related to COVID-19 and is co-sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute. All lectures are offered via Zoom webinar and open to the public.

  1. Christine Wong, Visiting Research Professor, East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore; Visiting Chair Professor, Schwarzman Scholars Program, Tsinghua University, will offer a lecture on China’s COVID Response and the State of Local Finance in the Xi Jinping Era on September 24, 2021. This lecture will be the annual lecture of the Columbia China Center for Social Policy this year.
  2. Xiaogang Wu, Yufeng Global Professor of Social Science, NYU Shanghai, will present on the diverse response to the COVID-19 crisis in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and the United States on November 18, 2021.
  3. Haijing Dai, Associate Professor of Social Work, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will give a lecture that examines the changing roles of family caregivers in the post-COVID labor market in China on December 3, 2021.
  4. Guobin Yang, Grace Lee Boggs Professor of Communication & Sociology, University of Pennsylvania, will give a book talk on his new book, The Wuhan Lockdown, in February 2022.
  5. Cary Wu, Assistant Professor of Sociology, York University, will share new findings on government performance and trajectories of political trust during COVID-19 on February 17, 2022.
  6. Yingyi Ma, Associate Professor of Sociology, Syracuse University, will discuss how Chinese college students succeed and struggle in American higher education on March 10, 2022.
  7. Bin Xu, Associate Professor of Sociology, Emory University, will offer a lecture that compares American and Chinese states’ cultural responses to the COVID-19 crisis in April 2022.
