Doctoral Fellows Sam Han, Yifan Lou, Xiaoning Huang, and Yalu Zhang Won Fellowships and Grants from Weatherhead East Asian Institute

Four Doctoral Fellows—Sam Han, Yifan LouXiaoning Huang, and Yalu Zhang—of the China Center for Social Policy won fellowships and grants from the Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI) of Columbia University. These competitive awards provide funding support to selected Columbia students committed to professional and academic engagement with East and Southeast Asia.

Sam Han won the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund for summer 2019 and the 2019-2020 academic year from WEAI. The Fellowship supports her dissertation entitled Pro-Work Policy Changes of Settlement Support Program and the Economic Adjustment of North Korean Defectors in South Korea.

Yifan Lou also won the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund for summer 2019. The grant supports her project entitled Perceptions of Advance Care Planning among Chinese Families: Inquiry before Introducing Advance Directives to China. This project aims to understand Chinese perceptions of advance care planning, explore the expectations on resources, and investigate the experience of elder patients with terminal illness, with special attention towards how the seniors communicate witht their families about medical treatments.

Xiaoning Huang received the Dorothy Borg Research Program Fellowship for the 2019-2020 academic year. His research investigates demographic characteristics, trends of education and labor market outcomes, and roles of macro-level economic indicators for international migrants from top sending countries in Asia (namely, China, the Philippines, and India) to top destination countries in North America, Europe, and Africa (namely, the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa).

Yalu Zhang was awarded a Weatherhead Ph.D. Training Grant for Summer 2019. She will conduct a comparative study on the prevalence, intensity, and impacts of health payment induced poverty among older adults in China, South Korea, and Japan.

Since its establishment in 1949, WEAI has been the center for modern and contemporary East and Southeast Asia research, studies, and publication at Columbia. The mission of WEAI is to bring together faculty, research scholars, and students in an integrated program of teaching and research on East, Southeast, and Inner Asia; to train students to understand the countries, peoples, and cultures of East and Southeast Asia in order to enable them to function with knowledge of East and Southeast Asia in academic teaching and research, government service, business, journalism, and nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations; and to advance the general understanding and knowledge of East and Southeast Asia, both inside and outside the University, through meetings, conferences, publications, and otherwise.
