Doctoral Fellow Nan Jiang Won the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad
The China Scholarship Council has awarded a Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad to Nan Jiang, a Ph.D. candidate at Columbia School of Social Work and a doctoral fellow of the Columbia China Center for Social Policy. This honor, which comes with a cash prize of $6,000, is awarded annually to 500 Chinese researchers studying overseas around the world and across disciplines. Nan Jiang is this year’s only awardee from social sciences in the East Coast of the United States. The award ceremony was held at the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York City on April 28, 2018. Dr. Ada Mui, one of Nan’s mentors, attended the award ceremony.
Nan Jiang was selected based on her research on aging, health, and the social and structural factors shaping the well-being of older adults. Her research examines macro- and micro-processes affecting health in later phases of the adult lifespan, long-term care, and intergenerational supports in the United States and China. Drawing from health economics and global health, Nan utilizes mixed methods to unpack the social determinants of aging in diverse contexts. She is currently the Co-PI of a policy evaluation of medical social work development in China, with funding support from National Health and Family Planning Commission of China. She was a fellow at the National Council on Aging in 2013, during which she provided detailed analyses of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
The Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad celebrates the achievements of non-Chinese-government funded Chinese Ph.D. students from different disciplines in 29 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia and Canada. The aim of this award is to encourage outstanding young Chinese researchers to return to China after the completion of their professional training abroad. The China Scholarship Council and the Chinese embassy will provide support when the award recipient starts a career back in China.
